Welcome  to the Fire and Food Workshop.

Hosted by Letizia Mattiacci, owner and instructor at the Alla Madonna del Piatto B&B and Cooking School and Diana Strinati Baur, ceramic artist and creative mentor, this workshop will focus on the wonderful artisan history and makers of central Italy, the cuisine and wines of Umbria - and we will get hands on in Letizia's wonderful olive grove by pit firing ceramics together in the open air.  

In 2020 we’re offering two workshop dates, in June and November! Come and join us in the time of year that you prefer!

These workshop is both for makers and for those who would like to understand more about the ceramic process. We'll have time to talk about different methods of ceramic production and gain an understanding of how nature can influence this most ancient of artisan crafts. And there are visits - to artisans of all kinds, people who have spent their lives following in the footsteps of their ancestors, producing the most amazing of products. We’ll walk through historic towns like Asissi, Foligno and Gubbio, and the Woodlands of St. Francis of Assisi.

It's also a workshop for food lovers, as we'll be cooking together with Letizia in her kitchen! It’s an experience not to be missed!

Our beautiful agriturismo sits high above the medieval city of Assisi, where a soft breeze welcome each day. The rooms are beautifully serene, decorated with pieces of art that Letizia and her husband Ruurd have collected over a lifetime of international travel. Comfortable beds, heavy cotton sheets, amazing views assure us a restful sleep. We awake every morning to homemade bread and jams, fruit, juice, coffee and tea.

During the June workshop, we’ll visiting a biodynamic winery for a tasting. During the November workshop, we’ll visit a local olive oil producer!

Accommodations

We will stay at the beautiful Alla Madonna del Piatto Agriturismo. It sits on one of the highest ridges overlooking the city of Assisi. Surrounded by nature, olive groves and beautiful vegetation, we’ll enjoy the superb hospitality of Letizia Mattiacci and Ruurd De Jong. The peaceful rooms are soothing and relaxing, with stunning views and decorated with art collected on Letizia and Ruurd’s world travels. Homemade breads and jams greet us for breakfast every day along with cereals, fruit, coffee, tea and juice.

Letizia Mattiacci


Letizia Mattiacci is a host, a cook book author, cooking teacher and food expert who lives in Umbria, Central Italy, high up on the hills near Assisi, a beautiful medieval town. For the past twenty years, she and her husband Ruurd have owned and run a B&B with cooking school, Alla Madonna del Piatto. Letizia’s work as a food expert has been published in the American, the New York Times, National Geographic, and many other national and international websites. Her knowledge of the Umbrian Kitchen and her passion for the ingredients and purity of their use led her to write her cookbook entitled, “A Kitchen with a View”. The book, together with her blog Alla Madonna del Piatto, provide a comprehensive and fascinating view into the history, breadth and depth of Umbrian cuisine.

They also tend to and cultivate over 400 olive trees on their property overlooking the magnificent pilgrimage city of Assisi, Italy.

Letizia loves good, simple food. Fresh, seasonal food that can be made in a short time at the end of a busy day.

Diana Strinati Baur


Diana Strinati Baur is a writer, ceramic and fine artist who lives in the Black Forest of Southern Germany and the in the wine hills of Piedmont, Italy. Diana and her husband Michael restored a 400 year old farm in southeastern Piedmont which they ran as a creative, upscale B&B, cooking school and art studio. After selling the property, they moved to Germany where they sell Piedmont wines and where Diana has her ceramics studio. Her first book, entitled True Vines, was a novel based in Piedmont and Pennsylvania (where Diana originally comes from). She sells her ceramics and art internationally through her website Diana Baur Creations and small exhibitions.

The house the couple now own in Italy is a 400 square foot mini-house which serves as a creative art studio and place to write Diana’s second book, due out in summer 2019.

Diana’s roots are deep in the country side of Emilia Romagna, where her family comes from. She still cooks the traditional recipes of her ancestors.
